Northwestern State University, more commonly referred to as simply NSU, is a four-year public university primarily situated in Natchitoches, which is the parish seat of Natchitoches Parish, situated in the US state of Louisiana, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 18 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. The city was incorporated in February, 1819, and it is the oldest permanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase.
NSU was founded in 1884, first starting as Louisiana State Normal School, with the purpose to train teachers, becoming known under it current name in June, 1970, when it gained university status, thanks to Governor John J. McKeithen, who signed a legislative act that made it possible. NSU was the first educational institution in the state to offer degree programs in business education and nursing, and it is also one of the 1st 6 colleges to enter into NASA’s Joint Venture Program (`JOVE`).
Northwestern State offers its students more than 50 degree programs in various fields of study, its student enrollment being estimated at an approximated number of nearly 10 000 students, having more than 70 000 alumni, living worldwide. NSU’s main campus is located in Natchitoches, but the university also has a nursing campus in Shreveport, as well as general campuses in Alexandria and Leesville/Fort Polk.
The athletic teams from NSU are known as the Northern State Demons, who compete in the Southland Conference, being perhaps best known for their achievements in basketball, with their most notable win being the one on March 17, 2006, when they defeated 3rd-seeded, 15th-ranked, Big Ten Conference tournament champion Iowa, in the 1st round of the 2006 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, shocking the college basketball world.
The list of notable NSU alumni contains resonant names such as historian Henry C. Dethloff - author of more than two dozen books on American business, obtained his Master of Arts degree from Northwestern in 1960, U.S. Representative and State Senator Speedy O. Long, Robert DeBlieux - historical preservationist who developed the Natchitoches Historic District, also served as a mayor from 1976-1980, William Stewart Walker - United States Army officer during World War II, as well as many other people, who have made themselves notable, in various fields, after graduation.
